The Tier 2 (General) visa was the UK's primary work visa for skilled overseas workers until December 2020, when it was replaced by the Skilled Worker Visa. However, many people still search for "Tier 2 visa" — so this guide clarifies what's changed and points you to the right information.

Tier 2 is now the Skilled Worker Visa

Since 1 December 2020, new applicants apply for a Skilled Worker Visa rather than a Tier 2 (General) visa. The replacement brought several changes: the minimum skill level was lowered from degree-level (RQF 6) to A-level equivalent (RQF 3), the Resident Labour Market Test was abolished, and the salary thresholds were restructured.

If you're currently holding a Tier 2 visa, it remains valid until its expiry date. When you extend or switch, you'll be moved onto the Skilled Worker Visa route.

Current requirements (Skilled Worker Visa)

The core requirements mirror the old Tier 2 system. You need a job offer from a licensed UK sponsor, a Certificate of Sponsorship from your employer, a salary meeting the higher of £38,700 or the going rate for your occupation, English language ability at B1 level, and at least £1,270 in maintenance funds.

Sponsorship: what employers need to know

To sponsor a Tier 2/Skilled Worker Visa holder, an employer must hold a valid sponsor licence from the Home Office, assign a Certificate of Sponsorship for the specific role, pay at least the applicable salary threshold, and comply with ongoing reporting duties.

The sponsor licence application takes 8–12 weeks and costs £536 for small sponsors or £1,476 for medium/large sponsors.

Planning your future in the UK

After 5 years on the Skilled Worker route, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (settlement). Many visa holders use this period to establish themselves financially — including buying property.

As a Skilled Worker Visa holder, you have the right to buy property in the UK from day one. Our conveyancing team specialises in helping visa holders navigate the property purchase process, from understanding the additional stamp duty surcharge for non-residents to meeting enhanced anti-money laundering documentation requirements.
